Global warming 'past the point of no return'

A record loss of sea ice in the Arctic this summer has convinced scientists that the northern hemisphere may have crossed a critical threshold beyond which the climate may never recover. Scientists fear that the Arctic has now entered an irreversible phase of warming which will accelerate the loss of the polar sea ice that has helped to keep the climate stable for thousands of years.
They believe global warming is melting Arctic ice so rapidly that the region is beginning to absorb more heat from the sun, causing the ice to melt still further and so reinforcing a vicious cycle of melting and heating.
And, just in case you're one of those who believe that global warming is all bunk, you can always go with the 21st Century version of Hitchcock's "The Birds:"
Avian Flu: Is the Government Ready for an Epidemic?
Virus Poses Risk of Massive Casualties Around the World
Sept. 15, 2005 — It could kill a billion people worldwide, make ghost towns out of parts of major cities, and there is not enough medicine to fight it. It is called the avian flu.
This week, the U.S. government agreed to stockpile $100 million worth of a still-experimental vaccine, while at the United Nations Summit in New York, both the head of the U.N. World Health Organization and President Bush warned of the virus' deadly potential.
And, if not the birds, then certainly the cyborgs:
And, if not the cyborgs, then definitely the kittens:
(So, OK, I'm having a hellish time at work with more projects than I can possibly hope to finish...and that kitten has fleas.)
UPDATE: i think i need a nap
hahahaha
ReplyDeletegood one. (except it's too bad we're all gonna die)
I KNEW my cat allergy was a sign of something wrong! I wonder if I'm allergic to cyborgs, too?
