In the new poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday nights, President Bush’s approval rating has reached a record low. Only 26 percent of Americans, just over one in four, approve of the job the 43rd president is doing; while, a record 65 percent disapprove, including nearly a third of Republicans. You have to go all the way back to Nixon to find a lower number. In early 1974, as Watergate was raging, Nixon scored a 23% approval rating in a Gallup poll. Only Nixon's gone lower than dubya.
Nixon.
More bad news:
Why the Democrats in Congress continue to treat this guy like he has any sort of political capital I'll never understand. Looks like a lot of Democrats feel the same way:The war in Iraq continues to drag Bush down. A record 73 percent of Americans disapprove of the job Bush has done handling Iraq. Despite “the surge” in U.S. forces into Baghdad and Iraq’s western Anbar province, a record-low 23 percent of Americans approve of the president’s actions in Iraq, down 5 points since the end of March.
But the White House cannot pin his rating on the war alone. Bush scores record or near record lows on every major issue: from the economy (34 percent approve, 60 percent disapprove) to health care (28 percent approve, 61 percent disapprove) to immigration (23 percent approve, 63 percent disapprove). And—in the worst news, perhaps, for the crowded field of Republicans hoping to succeed Bush in 2008—50 percent of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of terrorism and homeland security. Only 43 percent approve, on an issue that has been the GOP’s trump card in national elections since 9/11.
In the scariest news for the Democratic candidates seeking their party’s nomination in 2008, even rank-and-file Democrats are unhappy with Congress, which is narrowly controlled by their party. Only 27 percent of Democrats approve of the job Congress is doing, a statistically insignificant difference from the 25 percent of Republicans and 25 percent of independents who approve of Congress. My own guess is that the minute the Dems in Congress show some backbone and stand up to this corrupt administration, the poll numbers will climb. They were elected to end dubya's bloody war. So end it. That's what the people want.
Dayvoe, I'm not clear about why you keep posting Bush's declining poll numbers. Of course they're terrible, but he doesn't care. He has political and industrial cronies to pay off; he has Dick Cheney to answer to; and nothing will happen to him regardless of his ratings.
ReplyDeleteSo Mr. Bush will continue to gather more and more power to himself. He will continue to insure that the rich in America keep getting richer and the rest of us keep getting screwed. He will continue to shred America's armed forces in a war that is now supported only by his administration, Braden, and XRanger -- and I'm no longer so sure about X.
This Congress is a completely political body, bereft of courage and apparently incapable even of pragmatism. They're not going to challenge him in any serious way. And of course, Mr. Bush himself has turned the Supreme Court (the court that appointed him President in the first place) into a rubber stamp for wingnuts. Don't let's look for relief from them.
As for the people, most don't care. Most are willing, even eager, to relinquish civil liberties in return for false promises of safety. Many of those who complain about Mr. Bush would turn around to defend him if he were attacked in any serious way.
So his ratings do not affect his behavior, the behavior of the Federal government, or the consequences to the working class in the least, except perhaps to make Mr. Bush even angrier, more rapacious, and more vindictive. There is therefore no reason to feel or act victorious about Bush's bad numbers.

ReplyDeleteCan't argue with any of what you said. To paraphrase my most unfavorite bit of pop vernacular, "It's all bad."
My question, yet to be answered by anyone of the GOP side of the planet is this; at what point will we be able to leave Iraq? In other words, what are THEIR benchmarks for victory? A stable government? (How will you define that?) I'm asking a serious question here...and I'd love to get a serious answer any of the conservative lurkers...but I fear there is none....

ReplyDeleteAs always, I appreciate your comments.
I continue to post the poll numbers as a reminder to whomever may have forgotten that the American people don't like how this president is doing his job.
To listen to his defenders (what few there are left) it's as if this information has never passed their retinas. Ever. Someone has to remind them. If not, then other people might begin to believe that America is moving on the right track, that the war in Iraq was justified and that this president is doing an OK job.
It's also a reminder to the few members of Congress who may from time to time take a passing glance at this blog. They shouldn't be bending over backwards to appease this incredibly unpopular president.
They just weren't elected to do that.
bush's numbers are lower than carter's were and he's well on his way to ratings lower than nixon's.
ReplyDeleteyet, the congress STILL act like he's the king instead of an elected servant of the people
and then there's lord cheney!
Imagine how low his numbers would be if you removed the responses from the Bible Belt, Colorado Springs and Utah.
ReplyDeleteDavid DeAngelo forgets to mention:
ReplyDelete"New Gallup data show confidence in Congress at all time low
Just 14% of Americans have a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in Congress.
This 14% Congressional confidence rating is the all-time low for this measure, which Gallup initiated in 1973. The previous low point for Congress was 18% at several points in the period of time 1991 to 1994.
Generally speaking, Americans have been skeptical about Congress for decades now. But the current 14% confidence rating for Congress is down from 19% last year and is the lowest in Gallup’s history, surpassing the 18% confidence in Congress measured in 1991, 1993 and 1994"
David DeAngelo? Are you still there? Or are you going to blame Bush for their horrible performance again?
Or how about the 24% approval rating congress recently received? Nothing to say about that David DeAngelo? Or again, are you going to blame Bush again for their lower numbers than Bush?
But don't tell David DeAngelo that he's biased....we don't want to piss him off.
David, you are the biggest (no pun intended) phony. Seriously, what gives? You'd make a good "partner" for Michael Moore there buddy. Did you ever think about giving him a call? In fact, you two could hang out together and then when one of you starts to feel the chest pains due to the both of you constantly overgrazing at the "all you can eat" buffet...you can both go down to Cuba and let their awesome health system take care of you. Maybe they can get the same Doctor who worked on the big guy himself...you know the one...the one the Cuban Government brought in from Spain?
Ladies and gentlemen, our troll is back.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to ask when I blamed "Bush for [Congress'] horrible performance"? in the first place. Where in the posting did I say that?
From the beginning of his comment, the troll gets it all wrong.
But again, I'm not sure what the troll is trying to say here. If you go back to the initial gallup page that he quotes (but never links to - it's here: http://www.galluppoll.com/content/default.aspx?ci=27946 ) It says quite clearly in the second paragraph:
Gallup's annual update on Americans' confidence in institutions shows that confidence ratings are generally down across the board compared with last year. The public's confidence ratings in several institutions, including Congress, are now at all-time low points in Gallup's history of this measure. These low ratings reflect the generally sour mood of the public at this time.
Across the board. Infact the "confidence levels" of all three branches of government have been moving downward for years. The troll's own beloved president has lost more than half (from 58 to 25%) of his support since June 2002. Something else the troll forgets to point out.
As for Congress, add to the general sour mood the fact that they failed at reining in this corrupt, criminal president and it's no surprise that they're now getting low approval ratings in the mid-20s.
The only thing worse would be a Republican-led congress.
And the Democrat run Congress has an approval rating of 14%! Looks like G.W. wins again, but who would like a guy who wants to grant amnesty to thousands of murderers, gang bangers, terrorist and pedophiles mixed in with the other millions of felons who are here illegaly!
