He can't be serious, you're saying. There's no way HE could be be chatting with HER, you're yelling between knashings of your teeth. Something must be dreadfully wrong with The Universe in order for that to happen, you're screaming while pulling out what remains of your hair.
Nope. It's all true, The proof is right there. On the right. Get it? It's a pun.
Earlier this election year, I interviewed two prospective candidates for Tim Murphy's House Seat; Wayne Dudding and Steve O'Donnell. I thought it only fair to extend the same invitation to one who's looking to reacquire Jason Altmire's House seat. And the rest, as they say, is history. Well, recent history.
Sitting in a bright corner of Mitchell's Fish Market downtown, me with a ginger ale, Hart with an alcohol-free Seabreeze and Alicia, Hart's Campaign Manager, with a diet Pepsi, we had a very nice chat about her campaign. I started the ball rolling by asking her why she wanted to run again.
After devouring at the orange slice that came with the Seabreeze, she answered that she had a lot of reasons to run. She said she's looking to finish some projects she was working on when she left Congress - some highway projects in order to bring economic development to the area, for instance.
Every now and then throughout our chat, her well manicured fingers tapped at the table for emphasis.
Her main point, and one I'm guessing she's relying on for her campaign, is that she feels she's a "better fit" for the voters in PA-4. While Democrats constitute 57% of the district, she says, the voters there don't fall into an Republican vs Democrat choice. The voters, she said, want lower taxes, less regulation and so forth. Assuming a leftward shift in the Democratic Party (and, unfortunately, she did use the incorrect "Democrat Party" a few times), she said that given the current political climate John F Kennedy would be a Republican these days. PA-4 voters, though, are closer to JFK than they are to Nancy Pelosi, she said.
Obviously she's thinking she'll win in November, when asked about the three recent special elections (the ones where Democrats beat the Republicans in highly "red" districts) she side-stepped a bit. As they were special elections, they shouldn't be used as a model for all the elections to come.
When asked about the overwhelming advantage money Congressman Altmire has at the present time (at last count, he has $1.3 million on hand to her $393,000, with little possible help from the NRCC) she said, "We'll have what we need."
Given her high conservative ratings from the National Journal, she scored an 83 on economic policy (higher than Orrin Hatch) and an 89 on foreign policy (higher even than Rick Santorum), I wondered how she close of a match she could be.
I wondered, as well, how she would explain how she, if she indeed was a "better fit" for the district, was voted out of office in 2006. She explained that that year was an anomaly. The voters were sending a message. They were mad about the war, they had reason to be angry and they took it out on the Republicans.
Now however, the situation in Iraq is getting better, she said and Bush is not an issue in this campaign and so on. My guess is that the voters will decide whether either of those are indeed the case.
I had to ask about her appearance on Pintek's show from a few weeks ago. She was on and said that the Chinese were drilling off the coast of Cuba. This urban myth has since been debunked and even the office of the Vice President has said it wasn't true.
She agreed. The Chinese weren't drilling. They were relying on this old NYTimes article and this recent column by George Will. They said they'd heard it from so many places they figured it was probably true. It seemed true and in fact the Cubans did make a deal with the Chinese.
She did add, however, that they may be drilling now.

So Ms Hart is saying she wants to finish some projects that are in her district. That may resonate with voters, but it brings up an interesting question. How can the supposed small government Republicans who decry the Democrats and their pork barrel efforts run on bringing more pork into their districts.
I can see where Jason Altmire is a reasonable fit for that district. If you wanted to find a liberal democrat, I don't think you would look a government relations from a health insurance company. Altmire's background makes him a natural for a middle of the road politician, perhaps a detail man who will work harder on district issues than national ones.
FWIW.
Don't forget that Altmire's gotten lots of well deserved good press for his attention to veterans' issues
Missy has nothing to run on, essentially. Despite her protestations, the last election was not an anomaly; it was the will of the voters in her district....the same voters who are still there.
She and Tim Murphy are both trying to reinvent themselves as moderates, who suddenly have all this interest in energy, the environment and other issues which are typically Democratic. They are running to the middle with all due speed.
I am particularly amazed at Hart's previous statements about what a great stewart of ethics she is; her time on the Ethics Committee involved mostly stonewalling any efforts to bring the GOP malefactors up on charges...but she's hoping no one remembers that.
I look forward to the entire draft of your interview...

My feeling is that the majority of voters in PA-4 were very happy to see her go. She did not present herself as the independent style of Republican but one who was very much part of the machine.
I am happy with Altmire's work in congress and will be voting for him again.
Regardless of your political alignment, it has been obvious that Altmire is much more independent than Hart
Jason Altmire has accomplished so much in his first term. I can’t see why anyone would want her back. Like Rick Santorum, it is time for her to get on with her life’s work.
There is no better fit for the district than Jason Altmire. Action speaks louder than words, and it was Hart’s actions which drowned out the beat of her empty rhetoric -- she was thrown out of office for reasons, even before she claimed the Chinese were drilling off the coast of Cuba. She needs to just reach out a hand to Tim Murphy and lead him out the door.
We danced in the streets of Murrysville when Ms. Hart was voted out in 2006. She must be a masochist to try again so soon in the 4th, with the Iraq War she supported still consuming resources best directed to our district. This season I will again be working to insure Ms. Hart's defeat by canvassing door-to-door for Jason Altmire.
Why doesn't Melissa Hart get a real job and stop attempting to live off the voters. She was a dismal failure in office for our district.
The only accomplishment she can point to is having 376 extended to the the airport. Grant it now, all she did was have the 376 signs put up on route 22. It was just a cosmetic change, nothing more.
As for her other votes, she voted in line with GW 99.7% of the time. She is anything other than an independent mind. This latest debacle of retelling the cuba china myth simply demonstrates that Hart has no independent intellect or comprehension herself or that she simply fails to use it.
The last thing we need in PA-4 is a right-wing Republican mouthpiece that offers us nothing but Bush/heney talking points.
When Mark Kirk (IL-10) repeated the Republican talking point about the Chinese drilling 50 miles off the coast of FL I decided to do a little googling.
Here's what I came up with. The Cubans would love it if someone, anyone would drill for oil off their coast. The Spanish tried in 2001 and the Brazilians tried in 2004 and both came up empty. The US Geological Service estimates there may 4.6 billion barrels of oil in Cuban waters in the Gulf. Probably less than that on the US side off FL. 4.6 bbl = 230 days of US oil use at 2007 rates of consumption. Any big oil finds are more likely to be further west off Mexico or the US if they exist at all.
Cuba has about 59 parcels available for offshore leasing. Foreign companies (Cuba has no indigenous offshore drilling capability) have taken flyers on 16 of them but haven't done much if anything with them.
The conclusion I reached is there's little reason to drill for oil on the FL side or the Cuban side of the Gulf unless you really, really want to help Cuba wean itself off Chavez' oil.
The Chinese know this but Republicants don't or prefer to lie.
There's a whole lot more here if you'd like to see the linked articles.

Voting against our troops while taking money from those who seek to demoralize them!
Evidence
Exhibit A:
Jason Altmire voted to defund our troops, toeing the line for John Murtha’s “SLOW BLEED”. Thus voting to denying our troops and their commanders the needed reinforcements, ammunition, supplies, and equipment needed to be safe and win in Iraq. Vote taken February 16th 2007. Jason Altmire’s vote was condemned by the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.
Exhibit B:
Jason Altmire has taken $149,800 from MoveOn.org while this far-left radical group was running full-page newspaper ads calling General Petraeus (whose awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit awards and the Bronze Star Medal for valor). “General Betray Us” (Sep 13, 2007). Jason Altmire likes having it both ways! First he says “I’m for the troops” then he takes $149,800 from radical organizations that seek to demoralize those same troops. Ask to give the money back he said “NO”! What is there to think about Jason Altmire? MoveOn.org’s actions have been condemned by the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars.
NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO VOTE NO! on Jason Altmire!
Jason Altmire:
Please answer whether you spent time as a juvenile offender, at The Shuman Center.
Seems you Microwaved the Neighbors cat, and sadly killed the poor animal.
Can you talk about that or should the people of Lower Burrell do the speaking about this crime?
