Planned Parenthood supporter? There's one place to be and one place to avoid on Saturday!

If you support women's reproductive health and rights, then please don't go to Planned Parenthood tomorrow (unless of course you have an appointment). On Saturday, there are planned protests occurring outside of Planned Parenthood offices nationwide -- including here in Pittsburgh.

Naturally enough, some are organizing counter protests.

All good, right?

NO.

That 'no' is coming from Planned Parenthood itself:
Adrienne Verrilli, Associate Vice President of Communications at Planned Parenthood of New York City told The Huffington Post on Tuesday that too many cooks in the kitchen can be really detrimental to a patient’s experience ― and the patient’s experience is their ultimate priority.
“Our goal is making sure our patients are comfortable,” she said. “The quieter it is outside, and the less people are engaging with each other, the better it is for our patients.”
...
When counter-protestors are present, patients don’t see them as helpful, Verrilli said, “they just see chaos.”
Planned Parenthood of Western PA is in agreement: They do not want counter protesters.

Unfortunately, there is a counter protest planned.

A Facebook event was set up for the counter protest by a group of three men and two women, with the International Socialist Organization - Pittsburgh later added as a sponsor.

Their event page garnered hundreds of comments from women and Planned Parenthood asking, imploring, and literally begging them to reconsider. The pleas were met with complete resistance -- primarily by two of the men who set up the page. Via Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondents:
This is what what my friend Jodi Hirsh calls ‘the ultimate mansplain.’  I am reposting my own comments from Facebook with regard to the intent of a group of self-identified Socialists to organize a counterprotest in support of abortion rights, but IN SPITE of the wishes and experiences of Planned Parenthood, clinic escorts, patients and pro-choice activists across the region.
This is not okay. A group of 3 men and 2 white women are organizing an event to defend choice in spite of the vehement opposition of Planned Parenthood, clinic escorts, patients and more.
This counter-protest threatens our safe access to PP clinics. It shows disregard for the leadership of women and the experiences of women. It flies in the face of logic.
But mostly it says that these men do not trust Planned Parenthood and do not trust women. They are taking action on our behalf much like all of the Republican men who sign anti-choice legislation do. Their opinions matter more than anything else.
Listen to women, socialists. Listen to women and demonstrate the capacity to model political resistance where men center women’s experiences instead of their own.
I'd link to that event page, but it was deleted by the sponsors and replaced by a new one sponsored solely by the International Socialist Organization and where no commenting is allowed.

And, in one more act of ignoring the reality of the situation, the cover photo on the new event page is actually taken from a rally in support of Muslims which took place in Denver (13th photo in the slideshow here) -- nothing whatsoever to do with women's reproductive rights. But I guess, they figure the 'look' was right. Just like they like the idea of a counter protest and the sound of their own voices -- however counterproductive that is in reality in this case.

If you could see their original counter protest page, you would see that Planned Parenthood tried to work with them. For example, suggesting that they protest at PP's Greensburg office which is closed for the day (so no patients to upset), or protesting outside of "crisis pregnancy centers" (fake clinics run by people who are anti-abortion). Planned Parenthood even set up their own event people could attend to demonstrate their support, but to no avail.

So, if you do want to support Planned Parenthood, again, please do not go to the counter protest in Pittsburgh.

Instead, join them at their I Stand With Planned Parenthood Celebration and avoid both the rabid forced birthers and the unhelpful mansplainers.

The irony of supposed supporters doing the exact opposite of what the group they say they're supporting is beyond rich. And, it's no way to be a real ally.

Via Facebook:
The Alliance for Police Accountability is calling all COMMUNITY MEMBERS (ESPECIALLY THE YOUTH), politicians, community organizations, faith based institutions, and community groups to stand together to protest the verdict in the case against George Zimmerman and demand that the DOJ file civil rights violation charges. No one should be subjected to such prejudice whether it be for the way that they dress, their race, religion and/or sexual orientation.

Walmart Vs. Small Business Saturday

Yesterday, was Black Friday and in 100 cities in 46 states Walmart shoppers were met with protesters:
At the Walmart in Paramount, Calif., near Los Angeles, about 600 protesters, including an estimated 100 Walmart workers, turned out Friday morning. In Hanover, Md., 400 store employees, union workers, activists and other supporters showed up at a Walmart Supercenter Friday.
In Pittsburgh, about 130 protesters showed up at the Walmart store at the Waterworks Mall. One Pittsburgh, helped to organize the protest here. From their press release:
In October, over 100 Walmart workers went on strike at 12 different stores in 10 separate states, including Walmart warehouse workers in CA and IL. They were protesting intimidation and retaliation from Walmart managers as the workers sought to organize for a fair wage. Walmart intensified its retaliation in order to silence the workers. Rather than cow to the bullying tactics, Walmart associates across the nation are standing up and walking out. Walmart workers on both coasts have already walked out on strike as of November 19thand 20th, in protest over Walmart's scramble to scare associates into not taking action on Black Friday. One Pittsburgh, community organizations and concerned shoppers will join with the workers on Black Friday, taking a stand against Walmart’s bullying and a stand for fair wages and workers’ rights.
Regular folks throughout the country are wising up to the tactics used by big corporations to keep profits and CEO salaries high and keep working families down. Walmart is one of the richest corporations in the world, and the Walton Family has a combined wealth that equals 40% of the rest of America combined. Yet many of their workers cannot afford to take care of their own families, and are forced to use state funded healthcare and food stamps. Workers, taxpayers and shoppers are tired of Walmart’s greed and on Black Friday they’ll be taking a stand,
Here are some photos from that protest (courtesy of Joy Sabl):

Today, is Small Business Saturday. If you don't like the economics and social ramifications of big box stores like Walmart, you can support locally-owned businesses by shopping there today (and the rest of the year as well). To make your shopping easier in the city of Pittsburgh, Councilman Bill Peduto sponsored legislation in City Council that will suspend meter enforcement citywide today for "Small Business Saturday."

One new store you may want to check out is the East End Book Exchange -- a "bookstore committed to maintaining an active enthusiasm for books and print culture. We offer a well-curated selection of used titles, along with new works by your favorite local authors." They're located at 4754 Liberty Avenue -- right in the middle of Bloomfield. (This is an unpaid plug, folks.)

So, check out some local stores and keep your money in town!

[snip]

WE INVITE:

All students, community leaders and activists, and residents to come and discuss the role of ethnic/racial profiling, stereotypes, and judicial bias in perpetuating violence and against minority groups in the United States. ALL ARE WELCOME.

CHIME IN ON TWITTER: #TrayvonatCMU
I'm assuming that no one who reads this blog at this point is unfamiliar with the racially-motivated murder of Trayvon Martin and the police inaction and misactions in this case (David blogged on an aspect of it here). Think Progress has a good rundown of it here and the Huffington Post has a news page devoted to it here.

Sometimes there are issues and stories that I want to write about, but feel too overwhelmed to do so. This is one of those stories where I've collected dozens of links, but haven't managed to publish word one. I'm glad that I can post something positive -- a rally that I hope anyone who can will attend. I will be there. Also, if you haven't already, please sign the petition at change.org calling for justice -- there are currently over 1.5 million signatures. (I do believe that social networking is playing a positive role in bringing stories like this to the attention of the media and the masses and, more importantly, producing actual results.)

revolt

If a member of the Tea Party sneezed it would make news, but it took the mass arrest of 700 peaceful protesters to finally bring the attention of the MSM to the 2+ weeks of round-the-clock OccupyWallStreet protests. Yes, there had been a story or two here and there, but nothing you'd really notice if you didn't watch the cable news shows (and precious little on those too for a long time).

There's some other differences too. The Wall Street protests do not have corporate funding and the police response has been a tad different:

VS.

.

But, I digress. The New York General Assembly of OccupyWallStreet released a declaration on the 30th. You can read it in full here.

Importantly, the Arab Spring American Fall is spreading. OccupyTogether is the national website charting protests from Maine to California -- and Pittsburgh is joining the fray:

You can attend the first meeting of the General Assembly in Pittsburgh this Wednesday:

OCTOBER 5TH PUBLIC ASSEMBLY/MEETING
First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh
605 Morewood Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15213
6:30-8:30 PM

This is open TO ALL who wish to attend.

You can ask to join the Facebook group here and the website for OccupyPittsburgh is here.

Yep, we're talking class warfare -- and it looks like we're finally fighting back. It's about the 99% vs. the 1% (hint: there's more of us).

Thanks for visiting us, Target!

We'll visit you later today.

I forgot to add in my previous post how ironic it is that a company which brands itself as being the hip big box alternative store with the name designers (many of whom are out gay) would give to an anti gay politician. We expect that of Walmart, honey. Really, how can you be "Targé" if you aren't pro gay?
