McCain Looses Another One

This time it's Richard Cohen of the Washington Post, who describes himself thusly:

I am one of the journalists accused over the years of being in the tank for McCain. Guilty. Those doing the accusing usually attributed my feelings to McCain being accessible. This is the journalist-as-puppy school of thought: Give us a treat, and we will leap into a politician's lap.

Not so. What impressed me most about McCain was the effect he had on his audiences, particularly young people. When he talked about service to a cause greater than oneself, he struck a chord. He expressed his message in words, but he packaged it in the McCain story -- that man, beaten to a pulp, who chose honor over freedom. This had nothing to do with access. It had to do with integrity.

But not any more:
McCain has turned ugly. His dishonesty would be unacceptable in any politician, but McCain has always set his own bar higher than most. He has contempt for most of his colleagues for that very reason: They lie. He tells the truth. He internalizes the code of the McCains -- his grandfather, his father: both admirals of the shining sea. He serves his country differently, that's all -- but just as honorably. No more, though.
And:
His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not.
When you've lost your allies at the Washington Post, you're in deep doo-doo.

  1. John K: Yah Yah Yah. This blog, 8 months ago, along with Olbermouth, was singing the praises of McCain. I knew, as did the conservatives, that come Sept you would be trashing him. Nothing new here. And the Washington Post doesn't support McCain, this is news to who?

  2. John K: Isn't it great that a Biden introducer refers to Palin as a "bucket of fluff". Keep putting it out there left wing kooks. Just drives the McCain/Palin poll numbers higher. By they way does the Washington Post have any poll numbers you would like to post. LMAO

  3. John, you've lied so much here at this blog you can't expect people to just believe you when you make these assertions.

WHEN did we ever "sing the praises" of John McCain??

    Link to a posting.

Until you do, we all know you're lying.

  4. we all know that he's lying, regardless of any link... but anyway...

simple truth is this; in 2000, many of us would have gladly taken mccain over bush. admittedly, i was not all that sold on al gore at the time. but after what the bush campaign did to mccain, and subsequently, what mccain has become, has completely turned me off to any thoughts of EVER supporting him!

  5. McCain is a mass of contradictions. I'm not sure how heroic it is to be a POW, but I doubt I could survive it as well as he did (I don’t believe that the Vietnamese took him out of the prison and put him in an apartment with hookers). McCain crashed planes early in his career, but in 1976 (after being a POW) he commanded a squadron that improved its safety record and won a commendation. McCain hung around with Charles Keating, but evidently has accepted almost no earmarks during his Senate career.

Still, right now, McCain is pandering to the lowest common denominator. The fact that it is working doesn't make it right.

  6. John K: Well if you take the time, which you won't, you can check the files from pre-Feb when McCain was a regular guest on Olbermouth and Matthews. Once, for instance, McCain even called Olbermouth Keith in response to a question. As for this blog, oh I don't know, how about the same time frame when McCain was criticizing Bush and you thought that would sell. LMAO LMAO

  8. John K: Oh Yah. When polled me and my crowd are still telling people we are registered Democrat, left over from the primary when we voted for Clinton, and then we say we support Obama. Not Hussein Obama, just Obama and his policies. LMAO LMAO Oh yah I can lie like a liberal.

  9. John K.,

Don't you think you're hitting the booze a bit early these days?

  10. It's true, John - Democrats have, in the past, lauded McCain for those moments when he broke with the fanatical, extreme elements of the Republican Party.

But that John McCain is gone. The selection of Palin made that very clear. In his place, is a man willing to sacrifice his honor and integrity, a man willing to do and say anything to become President, a man who once went against his party but is now TOO AFRAID to stand up to Republicans.

Why this is something you cannot comprehend, John K., is beyond me.

The man has retracted those positions he took that endeared him to Democrats and independents. Why you think they should still "sing his praises" when he's retracted the reasons they had for liking him makes entirely no sense.

But you should not be so dismissive of Cohen's opinion. Cohen was a huge fan of McCain; that he is willing to say this now goes to show just how far John McCain as fallen.

And no offense, Johnny Nutjob, but McCain's convention bounce is GONE. Palin's favoribilities are collapsing since the Gibson interview(she's gone from +17 favorable vs. unfavorable to +1 today in Research 2000's tracking poll).

My advice to you, John, is to maintain your arrogance, continue to lie and continue to support the lies of John McCain.

We can see how that's going to turn out for you; you haven't noticed yet.

Good luck trying to get a LIAR elected.

  11. How hysterical is this:

Not only did Palin support the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against(and btw dear wingers, as a governor, she doesn't have the power to "veto" earmarks), not only did Palin keep the money for the bridge and use it for other projects, but Palin STILL supports a $600 million bridge called DON YOUNG'S WAY that connects to Wasilla!

A Federal Highway Transportation study showed that while the bridge could reduce some commuter traffic, it was likely to produce more in other areas.

Maybe at some point McCain and Palin will decide what their "official" position on earmarks is. But they'll probably just go on talking out of both sides of their mouths.

  12. John K: Jaywillie, you got a poll to support that Hussein Obama stuff? LMAO LMAO He is sinking fast.

  13. John K: This is neat. Hussein Obama, when he went to Iraq, tried to convince Al-Maliki to not reduce troop strength till after he became President so he could take credit. Like I said, you lefties are not opposed to the war in Iraq, you just want credit for it.

  14. I saw McCain on the Today Show this morning and it was truly sad. He has become unrecognizable to me as the 'maverick' of 2000. I would have voted for him back then but there is certainly no way I would do so now.

He looked as rehearsed and automated as Sarah Palin did during her one and only interview. Guess they're trying to work out the kinks before they let her do another one.

But McCain used to at least sound like he was trying to answer the question or saying something somewhat relevant. Now he just repeats the same thing over and over again.

The Republican candidates are looking more and more like Stepford People. Guess they haven't figured out you can repeat yourself over and over again but it won't make anything true. On the other hand it seems it will let a lot of stupid people believe in you.

  15. Do you just ignore reality and hope it will be gone in the morning, John?

Because you are fucking out there...

Let me ask you, why should we listen to the lying supporter of a lying Presidential candidate? Why should we listen to you, John?

And there all kind of polls to back up the fact that McCain's bounce is gone. Sorry, bub, but it is; and it wasn't even nearly as big as Obama's bounce(McCain averaged a 2.9% lead compared to Obama's 6.4% lead after his convention).

If you want to see them, go look them up your goddamn self.

And, um, that Maliki bullshit you're peddling? Yeah, that's a fucking lie started by you wingers.

Think about what you said for a second, John - what power does Maliki have in REDUCING US TROOP STRENGTH, hmmm? It's not his fucking decision, moron.

You're a fucking idiot, John K., and you and you're party and its candidate are drowning in the lies and smears you're telling. And now, instead of not lying anymore, you accuse Obama of some absurd bullshit you wingers losers pulled out of your asses.

Maybe you should just STOP LYING, John K.

And maybe you should actually provide counter arguments instead of this dribble you spew.

Honestly - I cite empirical evidence showing that Palin's favoribility has tanked after the Gibson(from +17 a week ago to +1 today) and you're counter is "Obama is sooooooo going down too." And yet that statement has absolutely no credibilty because it runs counter to what every poll is showing right now - a close race with Obama regaining ground, McCain's bounce eroding and Palin's popularity flagging.
