The Crazies Continue To Emerge

From the AP:
A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may - may not, I hope not - but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."
Naw, that doesn't sound crazy at all. Until you go find the speech President-Elect Obama actually gave. The AP points out that Braun cited a speech by Obama from July. You can watch it here. In the speech (the prepared text is here) Obama described, among other things, the benefits of public service. He said:
That is why I'm determined to reach out - not just to Democrats, but to Independents and Republicans who want to move in a new direction. And that is why I won't just ask for your vote as a candidate - I will ask for your service and your active citizenship when I am President of the United States.

This will not be a call issued in one speech or one program - this will be a central cause of my presidency. We will ask Americans to serve. We will create new opportunities for Americans to serve. And we will direct that service to our most pressing national challenges.

There is no challenge greater than the defense of our nation and our values. The men and women of our military - from Fort Carson to Peterson Air Force base, from the Air Force Academy to the ROTC students here on campus - have signed up at a time when our troops face an ever-increasing load. Fighting a resurgent Taliban. Targeting al Qaeda. Persevering in the deserts and cities of Iraq. Training foreign militaries. Delivering humanitarian relief. In this young century, our military has answered when called, even as that call has come too often. Through their commitment, their capability, and their courage they have done us all proud.

But we need to ease the burden on our troops, while meeting the challenges of the 21st century. That's why I will call on a new generation of Americans to join our military, and complete the effort to increase our ground forces by 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 Marines.

Now watch closely and remember the first sentence of that last paragraph. There's a burden on our troops, he said. We have to ease that burden, he said. Into the prepared text right after proposing an expansion of our diplomatic corp, Obama added this (the text can be found here):
We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.
THAT is what the wingnuts are spinning into a new "Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship." THAT's what Congressman Paul Braun turned into:
"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."
So in a speech where Obama looks to increase AmeriCorps and public service overall, increase the nation's support of our veterans, increase the foreign service and double the size of the Peace Corps it's not at all crazy to see how he's proposing a new Gestapo-like security force.

Nope, not crazy at all.

How long till the crazies start talking about The New World Order and The Unmarked Silent Helicopters and the UN Troops Stationed In The Secret Bases Across The Country threatening our precious national sovereignty?

John K: Yep that is what it sounds like to me. The mob. He also stated in other speeches that he intends to use this data base of e-mail accounts to mobilize the mob when he sees fit. Left wingers, this is exactly what Hitler did. Now your point of overreacting would be valid except for the fact that when people were directed to his website on Friday that had this as one of his 25 items, on Friday night he changed the website. You ain't fooling me.

John K: Left wing kooks like Ayers etc have always used mob like tactics to intimidate. Union thugs do it. So has anyone come up with a suitable sight for a guilotine?

I hope freaks like Broun keep it up. It will ensure the GOP is cast off even further into the wilderness. Then again, thanks to their love of tearing down every freakin' tree possible, there's not much wilderness left.

Bush wanted, and got, unlimited freedom to tap anybody's phone he wanted, and that's fine, patriotic even. Obama says he wants to expand AmeriCorp, and he's a Nazi. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. How do these people get elected? Why is stupidity embraced by the right? Actually, I don't care. Just hope they keep it up.

Kudos, Rep. Broun.

My question is; what exactly IS Obama suggesting? Do we need some new form of military internally? I realize that, by law, the US military is banned from operating inside the country, unless Marshall law is imposed, so what is he thinking? Am I missing something here? Don't we have the National Guard for internal disasters and the FBI and every state and local police force for internal crime fighting?

Unlike the nutballs, I don't think this is some effort to "take over," but am I wrong in thinking that he dropped this into a speech and didn't elucidate enough?

I await clarification...

John K. - site, not sight.

Clyde - Martial Law, not Marshall Law.

I know, I know, typical leftie intimidation tactic, correcting spelling/grammar.

I suspect Obama is talking about how the National Guard has been stripped of equipment to support the regular forces, and how the national guard has been used repeatedly in combat deployments in an occupation that was not supposed to need many troops (who also wouldn't need much equipment) because of the regular troops ninja like qualities, or something.

You know, the Democrats weren't happy about cancelling judicial rights, but voted for them because the President said it was necessary to protect American lives. Now Obama wants to enact common sense rules to help the National Guard, and conservatives talk about guillotines and the Gestapo. But Conservatives are way higher on the intellectual scale than liberals (not lumping you in on that, Clyde).

Maybe Dave should check out this that got deleted from the Obama website.
by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year

John K: The funny part is that everything Hussein Obama said during his campaign is now subject to spin. Do left wingers ever tell the truth? LOL

fox chapel high has community service,i'm pretty certain. it wasn't as long but it's still there and i think it's a fine idea.

and if our national guard isn't here then we need something to help fill in the gaps.

and seeing as republicans have been the party that is do as i say, not as i do, i think you are the ones figuring out how to put together a "guilotine" john k.

polishing up your boots too???

Actually what Obama was talking about is an expansion of AmeriCorps from 75,000 to 250,000 slots. This whole "Marshall Law" (sorry Ed, I couldn't resist) meme is the latest scare tactic from the sore loser right--and it's being pushed by habitual liars like Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy.

Here's the speech where Obama made the comments

Ah Dave, fair enough. I don't have time now to watch the video, but I will try to do so sometime soon.

Are you the same person as Clyde? I must have missed an earlier comment.

Hey Guys -

It was early. I'm an old guy. My mind often doesn't connect correctly to the keyboard; so I stand corrected on The Martial Plan. OK? :-)

But correct if I'm wrong; if he's talking about Americorps, then why the reference to a "security force?" What exactly IS he talking about? Or am I still being dense? He did say this, correct?

This is downright hysterical.

Our wingers are popping off like anyone gives a shit what they have to say.

Hey, morons - yeah, you John K. and Heir - if you don't have any credibility, it really doesn't matter what you say.

And after the last 8 years of Republican government, these guys just don't get it.

Was 11/4 not enough of a clue for you two dumbfucks?

Are you this obtuse?

See, Republicans can attack all they want - the country doesn't give a fuck about them right now and probably not again for a very, very long time.

So hearing a bunch of LOSER conservatives and Republicans attack Democrats, after the last 8 most pathetic years ever in the history of American leadership, doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.

If Republicans were smart, they'd just shut the hell up right now and figure out what the hell just hit them.

It's like listening to a football time that just got knocked out of the playoffs talking about how they're going to come back next week and win it all.
