Jack Kelly Sunday

Jack Kelly's column this week is about sea piracy, the Marines, and what President Obama must do with the Somalia pirates quicky:
The only effective way to deal with pirates is to kill them, as Thomas Jefferson did with the Barbary pirates, and the Royal Navy did a century earlier with the pirates of the Caribbean. The U.S. military has plans for dealing with the pirates, which need only the president's approval to be put into action. The crew of the Maersk Alabama has passed its test. Will President Barack Obama pass his?
Luckily:
An American ship captain was freed unharmed Sunday in a U.S. Navy operation that killed three of the four Somali pirates who had been holding him for days in a lifeboat off the coast of Africa, a senior U.S. intelligence official said.
It's Easter Sunday. I'll just leave it at that.

MONDAY UPDATE From The Fix:
On the surface, the Obama and his senior aides were only monitoring the situation but, according to a White House official, the administration was far more engaged behind closed doors.

Obama received his first briefing on the incident just hours after returning from his eight day trip abroad on Wednesday, and over the next 48 hours received further briefings to keep him apprised of the situation. By late Friday the president had authorized "potential emergency actions" to free the ship's captain and he did so again on Saturday. By Sunday at 4 p.m., Obama was on the phone with the rescued captain congratulating him on his new-won freedom.

And:
Obama's willingness to get his hands dirty in what could have been originally dismissed as a minor matter (although it grew into a national and even international story) paid off with the successful release of the captain.

  1. Luck was probably the lesser part of a nearly perfect result.

Properly arranging the sequence of aiming and shooting was likely the greater part.

When used properly, the American armed forces can be a tremendous and remarkably effective force for good.

I await the following from the Nation reading left.

The Captain overstepped his authority in using the "cold-bloodied killers"/snipers.
The UN and ICC will have to look into possible war crimes charges.
