A note on today's
end run in Wisconsin:
It's not just the budget bill needs a quorum -- the big issue is that *any* bill with fiscal implications is supposed to have a quorum in the Wisconsin state Senate. So there are two choices here:
1. Collective bargaining has fiscal implications, and so the bill will be blocked in the courts and ruled unconstitutional.
2. Collective bargaining DOES NOT have direct fiscal implications, and Gov. Walker has been lying this entire time by making the case that it's fiscally necessary.
So either the state R's just passed an illegal bill, or Walker has been lying this entire time and really is just interested in union-busting.
My guess is that it's 2. It was ALWAYS about busting the union.
My question is: why is there no condemnation of the blocking tactics of the minority in this situation as there were when the Rs attempted to block Obama's Heath Care Bill?
ReplyDeleteBecause the Democrats agreed to concessions in the Health Care bill that the republicans demanded, and then the Republicans voted against it anyway.
ReplyDeleteLikewise in Wisconsin. The Democrats agreed to the concessions the governor demanded, but held firm on collective bargaining.
In both cases, it was the republicans who refused to debate and bargain in good faith. "Bipartisanship" to Republicans is doing exactly what republicans want.
But I'm not surprised that a low information voter would ask such a question.

They hoped to use their absence as leverage.They had three plus weeks to come home, face the music, recognize the numbers , and get back to the work they were sworn in to perform. You know it used to be that police, firefighters and EMS were respected, even called heroes (who ran in the Twin Towers, PK?). It used to be that teachers were respected as people with bachelors, masters and even sometimes doctorates making less than people with equivalent degrees in the private sector, but performing an incredibly important public service. Now it is insults from conservatives, bulls-eyes on maps and "Don't retreat, reload".
ReplyDeleteIt's incredible that income inequity has gotten do large, and yet conservatives (getting money from the rich through campaign finance loopholes they engineered) insist that the middle class and poor must be further taxed while the rich need more tax breaks. Conservatives think that if they scream something loud enough and with enough hysteria, they can get voters to elect more Republicans, to pervert the government the founding fathers worked so hard to create.
How dare the public unions try to prevent their members from participating in the race to the bottom that the rest of the middle and working classes are running in?
