1 in 2 in US are poor or low-income

The next time some moron asks what the Occupy movement is about, give them these stats:
  • Census Data Shows 1 In 2 People Are Poor Or Low-Income

  • U.S. CEO Pay Jumps Minimum Of 27 Percent Last Year, Survey Finds
  • 5 comments:

    1. Add that 1 in 45 American kids have no permanent home and are either on the street, in a shelter, in a motel or couch surfing. Shameful.

    2. About 97.3 million Americans fall into a low-income category, commonly defined as those earning between 100 and 199 percent of the poverty level, based on a new supplemental measure by the Census Bureau that is designed to provide a fuller picture of poverty
So Half of US make under $36,000 or $45,000 if married.

      The Lesson of Ebenezer Scrooge

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”

“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish I could say they were not.”

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?” said Scrooge.

      “Both very busy, sir.”

“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to hear it.”

    3. HTTT, the "Lesson of Ebenezer Scrooge" article you quote favors ending all "coerced" government aid to the poor, which is to say all taxpayer funded programs that help the poor. I assume you are saying you do not want your tax dollars to provide healthcare for children, provide housing for the working poor, or even school lunches.

Yet that article mentions nothing about the favorable tax policy for the rich, about the billions in subsidies to oil and coal, about the tax payer funded bailouts for banks that turned around and gave out record bonuses. I guess you are in favor of those. Obama must be your favorite President, for all he has done for the rich.

    4. Oh, the travesty! We must immediately provide refrigerators to 0.4% to those that don't have one, TVs to the 2.3% that don't have one, A/C to the 22% that don't, a VCR to the unfortunate 35%w/o one, cable to the 36% lacking, etc.

Oh, we must increase the $$ amount allocated to everyone currently receiving Section 8, food stamps, WIC, free cell phones, $10 cable, etc... Oh, and find MORE people to participate.

Cry me a river about 1 in 2 being poor. There ARE poor people.. no question.. 50% of the American people 'poor'? NOT. Counting earnings (a novel concept to many).. sure.. if you grant the 'poverty level' premise (which I don't, btw).. but counting all the bennies that some of us pay for with AFTER-TAX $$? No way.

      Cue @Ed in 3, 2, 1.. with a diatribe.

    5. Hey CM, we all know how careful and rigorous you are when you analyze an issue. Your rant can stand on its own.

Well, I will say it seems to me you used to complain that Obama was not doing enough to reduce unemployment (by which I believe you meant lowering your taxes). Then you were worried about the deficit and the debt. Now a days I believe it is fashionable for (Austrian) conservatives to claim hyperinflation is right around the corner. I guess y'all never cared about the unemployed, despite all your whining before the midterms.

VCR's? Dude, that is so 2006.
