Hitchens, as is almost always the case, was right.

"[C]ivil society means that free expression trumps the emotions of anyone to whom free expression might be inconvenient." - Christopher Hitchens.

Expect more half-hearted bleating that this has nothing to do with Islam, but in any case even if it did, Islam is a religion of peace along with weasel words about “responsibility” to the effect that the magazine should not have “inflamed passions”. Simultaneously, expect a huge PR drive – supported by various lefty idiots – from Muslim groups who make it all about them, how they feel, and how they are now scared of a backlash before the bodies have even cooled. This is precisely what we saw in Australia a few weeks ago, and I don’t expect much from European politicians.

Its more along the lines of Christians blowing up clinics and shooting doctors, so I have to agree with Heir.

“Is it not clear, then, that those who are determined to be "offended" will discover a provocation somewhere?”
Free speech does trump all and merits full defense. Bringing a gun to a pencil fight is despicable, warranting of full retribution with the case of Paris being no different. Nevertheless, I would still find more nobility in death by wielding the sword of education than the sword of ridicule - provocation accepted and offense be damned. Is it a pipe dream to imagine a day when such confrontations won’t need to exist? When the water of the sciences is so abundant that it separates all of humanity from the snake oil of religion? I’m surely being naïve to think it possible, but as a society, the extension of education is where our focus must be if ending this war is in fact our collective goal. But education isn’t easy and costs money while heralding free speech sells itself and makes for better headlines.
Irrespective of free speech being an absolute right, honest attempts at education potentiate greater success at undermining irrational belief than publicly making a mockery of them. I believe this because it was precisely the manner in which I became enlightened.

Yet the left encourages the anti-Christian/pro-life backlash as opposed to condemning the fictional anti-muslim backlash.
