On Why We Shouldn't Torture

I heard this last night on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Ok, so it's NOT a transcript (haven't been able to find one) but I think I got the gist of it.

BM said that we can't take the moral high ground in regards to the Iranian seizure of those British sailors/marines if they're tortured. If we complain, what are the Iranians gonna say, that they're not doing it correctly?

Thus Spake Bill Maher.

Absolutely!

Imagine the conversation on the "Arab street" prior to Abu Ghraib and extraordinary rendition;

"I hate the Americans!"
"Yes, you may hate them, but they never lower themselves to torture."

Now imagine that same conversation afterwards....

Getting down in the mud and adopting the same tactics as your enemy is short-term thinking. In the case of the Bush Admin, it is/was all done either for political purposes or because POTUS is, clearly, a moron.

And I say that with all due respect.
