Obama Responds - twice

The Obama camp responded twice to the American Issues Project smear. First with an ad:

And second legally. From the Politico:
Sen. Barack Obama has launched an all-out effort to block a Republican billionaire’s efforts to tie him to domestic and foreign terrorists in a wave of negative television ads.
They sent a letter to the Department of Justice. In it, they call the ad "a knowing and willful attempt to evade the strictures of federal election law." As such it's "flouting" the law.

  1. 527's and independent ads...

Must be scoring some points. Karma is such a b*itch, isn't it.

Facts - Ayers was a radical terrorist (even though Ayers may not have actually planted bomb(s).. so Ayers and his supporters say). Obama's first campaign was launched at Ayer's home. Obama was associated with Ayers through some type of organization than burned through, what?, $110M with no discernible results?

Lie down with dogs.. get fleas.

  3. How about McCain's Terrorist funder - fight fire with fire Obama.

The co-host of a recent top-dollar fundraiser for Sen. John McCain oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to a Colombian paramilitary group that is today designated a terrorist organization by the United States.

Carl H. Lindner Jr., the billionaire Cincinnati businessman, was CEO of Chiquita Brands International from 1984 to 2001, and remained on the company's board of directors until May 2002. Beginning under his tenure, Chiquita executives paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC), which is described by George Washington University's National Security Archive as an "illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country's most notorious civilian massacres."

Following a Justice Department indictment last year, Chiquita admitted to illegally funding the paramilitaries and agreed to pay a $25 million fine. Chiquita's payments to the AUC began in 1997 and lasted seven years; roughly half of the funds came after the group was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department in 2001.

According to the Justice Department, the payments "were reviewed and approved by senior executives" of Chiquita, who knew by no later than September 2000 "that the AUC was a violent, paramilitary organization."

  4. Support of death squads and tyrants doesn't bother right wingers, so long as the killers and despots are also right wingers. It helps if the people getting killed and trampled are not businessmen -- and it never hurts if they are students or nuns or leftists or laborers.

So I don't think McCain's support for right-wing terrorists will hurt him with right-wing Americans.

Unfortunately for him, there are fewer and fewer right-wingers in the U.S. every day. So chances are his connections to traitors like Oliver North and Scooter Libby, or to fat cats like Keating and right-winger smearers like Charlie Black, and fat cat smearers like Harold Simmons and Bob Perry, are likely to haunt him throughout the campaign. Americans who understand this nation's economy won't care much for a guy who thinks lettuce pickers earn $50 an hour. Americans fearing loss of their homes won't think much about a guy who doesn't know how many homes he has, Americans worried about health care and their families won't be sympathetic toward a guy who dumped his first wife for a $100 million adultress and has been living off her inherited wealth ever since.

And that's just McCain. The Republican Party -- record deficits, George W. Bush, abolition of inheritance taxes, Dick Cheney, attacking the wrong country, George W. Bush, wasting thousands of lives by botching the invastion, Dick Cheney, opposing stem cell research, George W. Bush, disdain of science, Dick Cheney, immoral deferral of the costs of that military misadventure, George W. Bush, politicization of our Justice Department, Dick Cheney, torture, general incompetence, George W. Bush -- isn't much help to anyone these days.

Some right-wing blowhards who still didn't get the message are talking tough, but Republican legislators who want to keep their jobs are broadcasting advertisements declaring their support of Barack Obama.

I'm not saying McCain doesn't have a chance. Perhaps Cindy McCain's speech next week, in which she bravely recounts how she had to fight to call herself an only child by disowning her sister . . . and tearfully details how she had to slink around quietly with John and wait for him to ditch his first wife (and her icky limp and John's daughter) before they could get married . . . and shares her story of how tough it has been managing the hundred million of dollars she inherited without ever working a day in her entire life . . . and gamely recounts the tough times sweating out whether her husband's influence would enable her to avoid prosecution for stealing narcotics from a charity . . . maybe that speech will push John McCain over the top.

Lie down with a skanky adultress (and abandon your wife and child). . . get called for it.

  5. This repulsive smear effort must ask itself how it indeed contributes to stuff like the assassination attempt in Denver that authorities thankfully just broke up last night.

  6. John K: What smear?  Why would the left call it a smear?  If Obama has these associations, and they are current, then stand up and support them.  Instead Hussein Obama throws everyone under the bus.  Some friend. If I linked the folks who run this blog to Obama in an ad, he might try to deny that.  LMAO LMAO that would be funny.

  7. wtae is running it too. i saw it this morning.

its the only way the rethugs can get ahead. lie, cheat, rinse, repeat.

  8. John K: Once again I have to ask.  Is not Ayers connected to Hussein Obama thru Chicago?  They are connected personally, are they not?  So why is the left so afraid that we run them together in an ad?  What does the left have to fear about that fact?

  9. The Ayers ad is just plain stupid. News to the Republicans, the sixties are over. I can not even believe that the Republicans think running an add about something that happened when a candidate was 8 is appropriate.

Seriously, lets get back to the issues. People are suffering in our nation and McCain offers nothing of substance in relation to his policies with these ads.

  10. Good for Obama. His addressing of the Ayers problem is worst than Kerry addressing the swiftboaters.
I await the libel suit. Discovery should be great fun.
As for lies cathcatz how about this one?
The fact is that although we have had a president who is opposed to abortion over the last eight years, abortions have not gone down and that is something we have to address.
BTW, abortion have gone down under Bush.
Or Obama's claim that a staffer filled out a survey stating his full support for gun control. And the survey has notes in Obama's own handwriting.

As for the 8 year old defense.

He says in a new ad that he was only 8 years-old when Bill Ayers was plotting and carrying out terrorist attacks against the United States. Why didn't Trent Lott think of that! He was only 7 when when Strom Thurmond ran as a Dixiecrat in 1948.

  11. John K: Hussein Obama may have been 8 when Ayers bombed the US but he has known Ayers for 13 years and clearly knew about Ayers and his positions.  To include his position on 9-11 when he stated he wanted to bomb more govt buildings.

  12. Heir to the Throne,

Lets put things in context here. Trent Lott stated that the nation would have been better off if Strom Thurmond was elected president when he ran for on the segregastionist party.

If you can find a quote where Obama says the nation would be better off if the Weatherman succeeded, perhaps your comparision would have merit.

Unfortunately, it can not. The comparision is lackluster at best.

  13. All,

If McCain wants to go about this line of guilt by association, he is opening a very big can of worms. At the minimum, the Keating five scandal is guilt by association in relation to McCain. For those that review the issues though, it is clear that McCain utilized his office to profit personally and attempted to obstruct a federal investigation into Keating's savings and loan that cost tax payers billions.
