Trib Editorial Board (Yawn) And The Heritage Foundation

It's Saturday Morning and so you know what Richard Mellon Scaife's brain trust is doing.

From this morning's editorial page:
The Obama administration insists that the government can still spend its way to better times with a new jobs package for which the House this week approved $154 billion.

But the more government spends, the more it crowds out private investment, business growth and job creation, as documented in a new Heritage Foundation analysis.
No mention of the:
  • $600,000 granted to the Heritage Foundation by the Sarah Scaife Foundation in 2008.
  • $400,000 granted to the Heritage Foundation by the Sarah Scaife Foundation in 2007.
  • $800,000 granted to the Heritage Foundation by the Sarah Scaife Foundation in 2006.
  • $100,000 granted to the Heritage Foundation by the Allegheny Foundation in 2007.
As stated at this blog more than a few times, the Sarah Scaife and Allegheny Foundations are both controlled by Richard Mellon Scaife, owner of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Doncha think they should have mentioned the close to $2 million granted over the past three years to the Heritage Foundation by their boss, Richard Mellon Scaife?

The journalistic circle-jerk continues.

So stipulated, the Tribune Review should acknowledge and reveal it's connection to sources it cites.

By the way, the later versions of Firefox(tm) have a built in spell check. Much easier to type in these little windows.

Because it is there, and although it is not strictly the topic of the post, I would will say a bit about that Trib editorial. first it is not spending per se that causes "crowding out", either in the financial sector (the context in which I heard the term used in school) or anywhere else. government spending is positive for the economy, although private sector spending is probably better. The crowding out comes when government borrowing reduces the amount money available (to borrow) and increases the price (interest rate) of borrowing. You could also extend the concept, and suggest higher taxes reduces the amount of money in the system for private investment or spending.

Here's the thing, the debt and deficit were already high when Obama came into office, and the economy was already in a slump, with the financial markets staring into a chasm of depression. Bush had already pulled 800 billion out of thin air (borrowed it from China or somewhere) for the banks. Does the trib really contend that McCain would not have tried some sort of stimulus plan if he had got elected? It is possible McCain might have tried all tax cuts, and the official unemployment rate would be 33% and we have bread riots.

Trib's right, the economy is not doing great. But there is a chicken and egg component here. Is the economy bad because the stimulus was a bad idea or is it bad because George Bush caused problems and the stimulus was not big enough to magically fix them? Obviously I lean towards the second point, but I won't say I can prove it.

The funny thing is that Obama is a lot more moderate and pragmatic than his base thought he would be. I believe I understand why, that he realizes any liberal move he makes will cause racists and conservatives to say that blacks want to punish whites by taking whites' money. I am surprised no conservative has yet called the carbon tax the "reparation" tax. But we will hear the "r" word sometime soon, mark my words. From Conservative Mountaineer or HTTP, or Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham (the babe) or Fox News.

The Hertigage Foundation will NOT stop mailing me their propaganda. I've called them numerous times and requested to be taken off their mailing list, and they fail to do it time and time again.

I love the so called surveys they send to me masquerading as if they came from the National Republican Committee. Pisses me off so bad, especially when you look at the last page asking for a monetary donation.

I guess you can say my views have changed a little bit.

I don't know about you all, but both parties suck so bad anymore.

Talk about this country spinning it's wheels. The rut is getting deeper and deeper and deeper.

Anyway ...

Happy Holidays to ya'll. I thought your pieces on the Honzman were very well done, BTW.

Do you really have a Honzman mug? If so, I'm jealous.
