Dick Cheney Cares About What You Think

Well, maybe not.

Here's the transcript:

RADDATZ: Two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting.

CHENEY: So?

RADDATZ: So? You don't care what the American people think?

CHENEY: No. I think you cannot be blown off course by the fluctuations in the public opinion polls. There has in fact been fundamental change and transformation and improvement for the better. That's a huge accomplishment.

Think Progress has more:
This opposition to the war is not a “fluctuation” in public opinion. The American public has steadily turned against the war since the 2003 invasion. According to a new CNN poll, just 36 percent of the American public believes that “the situation in Iraq was worth going to war over — down from 68 percent in March 2003, when the war began.”

Even though he doesn’t care what the American public wants, Cheney still thinks he is able — and entitled — to speak for the American public. Last month, Cheney declared, “The American people will not support a policy of retreat.” If Cheney were actually listening to the “American people,” he would know that 61 percent actually supports the redeployment of U.S. troops. 4. Dick Cheney makes a good point. If the president, or administration in general, would regularly bow to the public it would be impossible to get things done. Cheney is an intelligent man, and I have great respect for him as a person. However, I completely disagree with his practises and feel that he could care less about the country, but loves his wallet thick.

This is a perfect example of where Cheney isn't thinking of the country at all, but is making sure his wallet continues to grow. Where his statement is true, he is using it in the wrong context. If this was a case where public opinion swayed slightly he would be perfectly correct in holding course. However, the administration is supposed to reflect the will of the people. In the case of the Iraq war, or in general this 'war on terror?', public opinion is of vital importance. The people have been against this war long enough, his claim that it is a "fluctuation" is baseless.
