Watching the Mayor

I mean, like, right now. He's giving his 2010 Budget Address at Pittsburgh City Council Chambers. You can watch too on the City Channel.

Lil Mayor Luke apparently plans to balance the budget with a 1% college privilege tax on college kids.

I am a homeowner in the city and planning to go to graduate school soon. I was considering Pitt, but now I'm looking outside PA. This plan is just crazy!

Call Mayor Ravenstahl's office to complain about the proposed Student Tax! 412-255-2626

Where does UPMC (and Highmark) fit into this? Do they have any obligations to the City, or has the Pittsburgh Promise taken care of that for UPMC, and apparently Highmark. When I asked over at the Comet, Bram threw West Penn Allegheny into the mix. I was thinking about health insurance companies, and if I had to guess I would not think West Penn Allegheny has a lot of excess revenues, but they could be looked at. Of course, UPMC is both hospital and insurance company.

Plus there is the whole nonsense that the Mayor wants to have us exit Act 47 status... I don't want to live in a city with no police, firepersons, paramedics or paved roads.

Chucka - the sole reason you are looking outside of Pittsburgh is because of $135/year? Unless you are headed to another school in PA, it seems to me you'll be cutting off the arm because of a minor scratch.

I'm in no way in support of the student tax--in fact I've already written He Who Shall Not Be Named--but being a Pgh/PA resident, the money I'll be getting next year to attend grad school is too nice to pass up. Have you checked private/public tuition for graduate schools outside of the state?
$160K vs. $30K total isn't even a debate.

Let's go after the ones who have the smallest voting bloc and who never show up at the polls.

Typical.
