Wired UK reports that "atmospheric scientists measuring ozone depletion above the Arctic have found that 2011's hole is the largest ever, due to an unusually long cold spell." Give it a few weeks, folks, and the likes of Newsweek will be reporting, as it did in 1975, on the coming of a new ice age. Here's the article at Wired.UK if you wanted to read it yourself.
While it's true that Newsweek reported, in 1975, a cooling world, it's simply a myth that there was some sort of scientific consensus that the planet was cooling. Who says?
The American Meteorological Society:
An enduring popular myth suggests that in the 1970s the climate science community was predicting “global cooling” and an “imminent” ice age, an observation frequently used by those who would undermine what climate scientists say today about the prospect of global warming. A review of the literature suggests that, on the contrary, greenhouse warming even then dominated scientists' thinking as being one of the most important forces shaping Earth's climate on human time scales. More importantly than showing the falsehood of the myth, this review describes how scientists of the time built the foundation on which the cohesive enterprise of modern climate science now rests.See that? They even used the word "myth".
Not that "facts" would ever get in the way of Scaife's braintrust in it's irrational science denial.

It's remarkable just how much stock they put in a single article that appeared in a single popular news magazine almost four decades ago.
Remarkable.

Interesting, thanks for sharing.
