In The Trib Today

This could have been a by now familiar "See how much Scaife Foundation money has gone to this think tank that the Scaife-owned Trib cites" sort of blog but it really isn't.

Let me get the business stuff out of the way. In today's Tribune-Review Craig Smith interviews Robert Spencer, director of Jihad Watch at the David Horowitz Freedom Center.

According to Mediamatters, the DHFC has been the recipient of $7.175 million of Scaife money between 1989 and 2009.  As always, no mention of all that Scaife support for the resource Scaife's paper cites.

That should be enough for a blog post.  But wait there's more!

Take a look at WHAT the interview's about:
Robert Spencer is director of Jihad Watch at the Los Angeles-based David Horowitz Freedom Center and author of 10 books, including The New York Times best-seller, "The Truth About Muhammad," and "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)."

We spoke by phone Tuesday after National Transitional Council leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil said post-Gadhafi Libya would be run under Islamic Shariah law.

Q: What is Shariah law and why should the United States be concerned that it will play a major role in the new Libya?

A: Shariah law is the very comprehensive law that covers pretty much every aspect of life. Muslims consider (it) to be the law of God that is unalterable, perfect and unchangeable.

It discriminates against women. It discriminates against non-Muslims. It denies the freedom of speech and the freedom of conscience. It's not going to create a free society by any stretch of the imagination. And the United States is now in the position of having aided in the creation of yet another repressive regime that denies human rights.
Hmm.  An unalterable religious law dictating every aspect of life - that's bad.  Very very bad.

I find this curious considering I found this at the David Horowitz Freedom Center website:
There is only one solution to the world’s problems, only one prescription for producing a near-heaven on earth.

It is 3,000 years old.

And it is known as the Ten Commandments.
The piece is actually by Dennis Prager and can also be found complete at TownHall.com.

The message from the David Horowitz Freedom Center is clear, that civilization depends on faith to exist.  But which faith?  The answer is just as clear: OUR faith, good.  THEIR faith, bad.

And how do we know?  We just do.  And if you don't agree, you don't love freedom.

Observe how Moslem majoritiy countries...Pakistan..the Sauds...treat Christians...and contrast that relationship when the reverse holds... Say in western Europe and the US of A..
Is there any distinction in the level of tolerance..for the peoples of the Book..Throw the Jews in the mix ..too..how does Israel treat its Moslem citizens?

I do not practice Islam, I did not grow up in a country where Islam or Shariah predominates. So I actually would not be happy if Islam became the State religion or Shariah took over our legal system. But since there is not even the slightest possibility that will happen ...

Meanwhile, it does seem like there are people here in the US who want to spread mandatory Christianity all around the world. That kinds of bothers me. Our values are supposed to be about tolerance, but the hypocrites on the right who claim to love the Constitution and Declaration of Independence but in fact want to tell everyone what to do and how to behave (mainly to the majority of us, be poor).

Christians are called to spread the good news...but darn if I can think of a country where christianity is mandatory...there are countries where a particular denomination prevails. But not to the exclusion of all others. Left and right both have hypocrites and wackos...but not in numbers to have any impact on the body politic..Just fringe noise..and grist for bloggers..

"fringe noise"? The Republican candidates? Not to mention Bush talking about a crusade. Is Dennis Prager a leading Republican intellectual or a nut job?

Winding down said...

What has Prager written that stokes your ire..? I'll see yr Prager amd raise with Chris matthews, and the rest of MSNBC crew...

I am lothed to do so ..chng the subject...but at the risk of a deluge of outrage at violating blogger protocol ... whats-yr-take-on-fast & furious? Any problem..or just a small bump on our journey..?

Rep candidates... they are the cards in play...what's a mother to do...no wiener schumer grayson pelosi reid frank dodd...the dems have all the heavy hitters...maybe next round..

I don't think Chris Matthews ever said the world must be christian in order to be at peace.

As for Fast & Furious, I have already written about it on this blog and my own. I stand by what I wrote.

I think among "wiener schumer grayson pelosi reid frank dodd" some have made mistakes, but in general I would stand (mostly) by their actions and intentions. Reid has worked with wildly distorted Senate rules to try to preserve the union, even as Republicans set records for filibusters. Republicans have worked tirelessly to get millionaires more and more money, making incredibly hypocritical statements about job creators and tax cuts that benefit the poor and middle class being not useful for the economy. Meanwhile Grayson made an incredibly powerful statement on Bill Maher's show about the plight of the poor in America that we would never hear the current Republican candidates say.

If you want to trivialize the Republican candidates and inflate the evilness of Democrats, be my guest. No reason that we should let reality enter the discussion. Your (yours and others) refusal to address issues realistically (like an academic might) condemns the poor to continuing suffering. Congratulations.

Chris gets a tingle..

Who ..an office holding national leader ...said the world must be christian to at peace?
I did not realize the union was imperiled to the point that reid needed to save it by manipulating senate rules.
I make no pretense of being an academic...therefore I am

not capable of addressing issues realistically...sorry
On the other hand you make reasoned and cogent arguments propounding and defending your positions..

Thanks for directing me to where you have expressed your view of fast and furious.

So shud the economic pie be increased or is it a zero sum phenomena and the only recourse is to slice it up and reapportion the pieces?

Where do new commerical ventures go for start-up capital?

Pass the hat underMacy's clock?

I suspect you may be an academic...pls suggest an economic system that would better serve our country ..
Is there a particuler writer who has advocated for something other than what we have?

If you can't see the difference between the good Christianity does in the world and the destructive force of radical Islam and Sharia, I can only pray for you and our Country. Hope you don't mind.

Has Christianity ever done evil in the world? Radical Islam is a problem, but I think that Sharia law is not something that Muslims are looking to impose on anyone (just like the Rabinical courts of New York City are not taking over our justice system) Personally I am not a fan of Sharia, but I am not worried that I will have to deal with it. I am more worried that Christians will decide it is their holy duty to exterminate Muslims (as they have in the past).
