Some notes for today's primary election

  • The ADB has a press release from Councilwoman Smith.

  • Slag Heap considers what a Zappala Peck win would mean.

  • Infinonymous notes that Ravenstahl can't even be trusted with taking care of the beer.

  • The Pittsburgh Comet finds that Tony Ceoffe ♥ scofflaws.

  • I will be voting for Patrick Dowd for mayor and Hugh McGough for Court of Common Pleas and cribbing from Progress Pittsburgh's Big Endorsement List (among other lists) for judicial votes (Barbara Behrend Ernsberger, Joe Williams, Susan Evanshavik DiLucente, Alex Bicket, Philip Igneizi, Anne Lazarus).

  • If I was in District 2 I'd vote for Georgia Blotzer, if I was in district 4 I'd vote for Natalia Rudiak, if I was in District 8 I'd vote for Bill Peduto, if I was in Wards 9 & 6 I'd vote for Susan Banahasky, and if I had to choose between Motznik and Diven I'd get a really big hammer and a really big steel spike and drive it into my own head.

  • I'll be poll watching all day, so no more posts from me today until fairly late (if any), so I'll say it now:

    GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!

    Patrick Dowd's Good Call

I received a call at 7:05PM on Saturday night and on comes the recorded voice of Patrick Dowd and I assume it's a typical campaign call, but it turns out to be anything but typical.

Turns out it was a virtual town hall. Once I signaled my agreement to participate I was connected to a live telephone conference with mayoral candidate Patrick Dowd and thousands of my fellow Pittsburghers. The moderator said that 2,000 people were on the line over the course of the event (the number of folks participating ebbed and flowed throughout the hour-long call).

Everyone was invited to ask questions of the candidate and Dowd had time to take about a dozen of them.

The questions asked were wide-ranging and included pensions/debts, employment, air quality, city/county consolidation, ending waste, youth curfews, and community development.

Those asking questions came from areas that included Westwood, Brighton Heights, Mt. Washington, Greenfield, Oakland, Lincoln Place, North Point Breeze, the North Side, and Park Place. There were multiple Southsiders who asked questions because we are a mouthy bunch (I was in queue to ask a question on pensions but a city cop beat me to it).

It was an interesting use of campaign resources. I've grown accustomed to participating in these types of calls by various issue-oriented groups, as well as the primary telephone pressers that the Hillary Clinton campaign held (I received email invitations to Obama pressers during the primary but would never get the confirmation code needed to call in). However, the issue group calls (and media/blogger-only pressers) were by email invitation and you called them. The Dowd call was an unannounced call that you accepted on-the-fly.

Dowd sounded intelligent, reasonable and well informed throughout the call. I have to say that I thought it was pretty cool idea.

I hate to say it, but I believe that Lil Mayor Luke can't be beat this time around. However, I've been wavering between voting for Dowd and voting for Carmen Robinson. The town hall on Saturday pushed me into the Dowd camp.

    Good call, Patrick.

Lil Mayor Luke Apologizes for Campaign Ad Lie Boo-boo

Apparently there's some sort of kerfuffle over one of Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's campaign ads.

I've seen Logs's Luke's spots and don't really have a problem, but judge for yourself:

    Some thoughts on tonight's debate

  • If we were back a year ago during the Democratic primary presidential debates, my inbox would have been full already with emails from the candidates' campaigns spinning the debate. Luke, what are you spending that million+ on?
  • Someone: Please tell Ms. Robinson to look into the camera (she did get much better as the debate went on).
  • Dowd: You had my grandmother at hello (actually, she mentioned something about "children are our future," "teacher," "school board," etc.) .
  • Joe Arpaio?!? Really, Wendy? From Wikipedia:
    - From 2004 through November 2007, Arpaio was the target of 2,150 lawsuits in U.S. District Court and hundreds more in Maricopa County courts; 50 times as many prison-conditions lawsuits as the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston jail systems combined.

    - Family members of inmates who have died or been injured in jail custody have filed lawsuits against the sheriff’s office. Maricopa County has paid more than $43 million in settlement claims during Arpaio's tenure.

    - In 2004, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office SWAT team led a raid on an Ahwatukee home in a gated subdivision, looking for illegal weapons. No illegal weapons were found, but during the raid, the house burned down, SWAT officers forced a dog back into the building where it subsequently died, and an armored vehicle rolled into a neighbor's parked car as a result of brake failure.
Wendy if that doesn't grab you, you might want to click on this link and read the part where Arpaio's deputies arrested Village Voice Media executives and Phoenix New Times editors and where a reporter for the Phoenix New Times, was surrounded and intimidated by Arpaio's deputies while trying to examine public records at the City of Phoenix public records counter. But then again, you seem really hopped up on the whole chain gang idea. Bob, please have a talk with Wendy.
  • Mayo: Nice question about the mayor making his schedule public -- too bad he never answered it.
  • I agree with Anthony:
7:56 Luke just mentioned O'Connor. God, give me strength.

7:57 Isn't it comforting to know what Luke now admits--that he wasn't ready to be mayor when O'Connor died. So in 3 more years, is he going to admit that he wasn't ready in 2009, either?

    The Debates

I'm trying to piece together a coherent picture of what happened yesterday with the debate.

First the debate was postponed. Here's Boren from the Trib:
KDKA-TV asked Ravenstahl to postpone a debate set for Wednesday because of the shootings. The mayor told the station he does not have time to reschedule before the May 19 Democratic primary.
    And a few paragraphs later:

Anne Linaberger, KDKA-TV's acting news director, said the decision to seek a postponement was based on "logistical issues" with planning a debate so soon after producing eight hours of live coverage of the officers' memorial service.

"We also questioned the appropriateness of debating important and pressing city issues without putting some time between the coverage of this emotional story and the debate. It was our intention to postpone the debate and reschedule it, not to cancel it," Linaberger said.

Then the charges and counter charges flew. Here's McNulty and Lord from the P-G:
The Ravenstahl campaign put out word that it had no time to reschedule the KDKA forum before the May 19 primary, setting off Mr. Dowd.

He called the Ravenstahl announcement "ridiculous. I have a busy schedule. I have five children. My wife has a job. I have a job. Who's he kidding that he doesn't have enough time? ... We have a city at the tipping point in our history."

His campaign followed with a statement alleging the mayor was using the killings of three officers in Stanton Heights as an excuse.

"That a mayor who has never run in a contested primary is using last week's tragedy to avoid a discussion about public safety and other critical issues facing our city is an absolute outrage," he said in the statement.

"Luke Ravenstahl has been absent time and time again: absent from meetings on the Hill District, absent from discussions on critical policy issues, absent from important decision about circumventions of the zoning and permitting policies. ... Amidst a citywide increase in gun violence, a national economic crisis and serious questions about ethics in the mayor's office, Luke Ravenstahl must make time to debate his mayoral challengers."

    Then the Mayor shot back:
In a letter to KDKA, Mr. Ravenstahl said he was disappointed the station canceled the debate without consulting him, and that he would seek a rebuke of Mr. Dowd from the Greater Pittsburgh League of Women Voters for violating a clean campaign vow.

That vow was "something Pat must have forgot in his insatiable quest for another political office," he wrote.

"But more to the point: How dare he use last week's tragedy for political purposes? How dare he even bring it up at a time like this? I find his comments disgusting, offensive and completely out of line. Pittsburgh deserves an apology. Shame on you, Patrick."

    From Boren:
Ravenstahl campaign spokesman Paul McKrell criticized Dowd for attacking the mayor and demanded an apology on behalf of the families of the fallen police officers.

"It is absolutely disgusting for anybody to use the deaths of three Pittsburgh police officers this way, and he needs to apologize to their families," McKrell said about Dowd.

Let's not forget that there are THREE Democrats to discuss here. We'd be remiss if we omitted Attorney Carmen Robinson. From the P-G:
Ms. Robinson, a Hill District attorney and former Pittsburgh police sergeant, said she would gladly participate in a rescheduled debate, but not if it would force her to cancel forums she already has committed to with the African American Chamber of Commerce, the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project and a law enforcement group.

She said KDKA has treated her scheduling conflicts, some of them driven by her work as an attorney, as less important than those of her two rivals, who she called "the two divas. I'm the woman in the race, but I call them the two divas."

There should be debates. LOTS of debates. I am told by a very reliable source that O'Connor, Lamb and Peduto debated over 35 times - 8 of them televised. The Mayor should be able to find the time.

    Patrick Dowd For Mayor

    Mayoral Debate Called Off

From Tim McNulty of the P-G:

Another Pittsburgh mayoral debate has been called off.

The three candidates in next month's Democratic mayoral primary were set to debate on KDKA-TV on Wednesday, but the station has called it off. A debate scheduled for last Monday, April 6, on WPXI-TV was also called off after the three fatal Pittsburgh Police shootings.

The next -- and now first -- debate is scheduled for Monday, April 20, on WTAE-TV.

KDKA-TV says Wednesday's debate among Luke Ravenstahl, Patrick Dowd and Carmen Robinson -- set to be taped in the afternoon then broadcast in the evening -- is being postponed. But the Ravenstahl camp says it has no open dates before voting on May 19, so the debate is effectively canceled. The only date it had open was May 4, when the WPXI-TV debate was rescheduled.

    Wonder why.

An UPDATE from the Dowd campaign:
That a mayor who has never run in a contested primary is using last week’s tragedies to avoid a discussion about public safety and other critical issues facing our city is an absolute outrage.

Since he became mayor, Luke Ravenstahl has been absent time and time again: absent from meetings on the Hill District, absent from discussions on critical policy issues, absent from important decisions about circumventions of the permitting and zoning processes, some of which have ended in death and others of which have cost the taxpayers. Yet, he has had time to meet with campaign contributors, ensuring that they will continue to procure no bid contracts.

Now, there is no time for the citizens?

I have pledged that as mayor I will make my schedule available to the public. Luke Ravenstahl should immediately show the citizens what meetings are more important than hearing him be held accountable for his record.

Amidst a citywide increase in gun violence, a national economic crisis, and serious questions about ethics in the mayor’s office, Luke Ravenstahl must make time to debate his mayoral challengers.

    This is an absolute outrage.
    And so it goes.

UPDATE: The Mayor's office responds. The text as posted on Matt H's blog:
About three hours ago, my campaign reaffirmed my commitment to participate in the scheduled debate this Wednesday at 1:30PM. We have yet to hear back from you and would again like to stress my eagerness to debate on Wednesday as planned.

I want to set the record straight: I was the first candidate to propose debates. I was the first candidate to propose dates for those events. The two other candidates, one with haste and one with vacillation, agreed to my proposal.

So from the moment the debate was set weeks ago, I fully intended to keep this date and see no reason why Wednesday's debate should be canceled by KDKA. I am also disappointed that the debate was canceled before anyone consulted with me or my campaign.

Finally, it is with great sadness that I must respond to the despicable comments by Patrick Dowd in reaction to your cancellation of this debate. I will seek an immediate rebuke of Patrick by the League of Women Voters, who secured a letter from each candidate promising a clean campaign - something Pat must have forgot in his insatiable quest for another political office.

But more to the point: how dare he use last week's tragedy for political purposes. How dare he even bring it up at a time like this.

I find his comments disgusting, offensive, and completely out of line.
Pittsburgh deserves an apology. Shame on you, Patrick.
    A follow-up statement from Dowd:
Obviously, I did not agree to cancel. I agreed that KDKA -- and all of us -- were stretched thin last week and for obvious reasons. I also agreed that they needed time to prepare. In a follow-up email (posted on my website dowdformayor.com) I offered dates for a rescheduled debate. Mayor Ravenstahl refused to reschedule the debate. There are about 720 hours in the next 30 days. Apparently, the mayor is busy during all of them.
    And so it goes.

Dowd Campaign Launches Campaign Website, Hires Local Firm

    From Dowd for Mayor:

Dowd Campaign Launches Campaign Website, Hires Local Firm
    Pittsburgh, PA March 5, 2009

This week the Patrick Dowd mayoral campaign launched a website at http://www.dowdformayor.com/. The campaign hired local start-up Bearded Studio to develop the site design and functionality.

"Our web design team epitomizes a story we'd like to see repeated over and over again in this city. Two young people with an idea and some entrepreneurial spirit start and grow a business right here in Pittsburgh," Dowd said. "Our campaign is thrilled to find and engage great local talent."
As Progress Pittsburgh pointed out, Lil Mayor Luke used an out-of-state company for his website:

Check out this tweet, from a guy in North Carolina - looks like Luke Ravenstahl has a new campaign website http://lukeformayor.com/ . The website is being designed by New Media Campaigns which is based in North Carolina. The guy who posted the tweet is originally from Cleveland, it doesn’t look like this firm has any Pittbsurgh connections.
Hey, Luke! That's a job that could have gone to a Pittsburgher!

Like Dowd, mayoral candidate Carmen Robinson also managed to find a Pittsburgh firm to do her website, Soul Pitt Media, which is owned by a local African American woman. Robinson's website is: http://carmenformayor.com

Speaking as a local web designer myself (see a sample of my work at http://www.georgiaforcouncil.com) this issue does resonate with me.

Lil Mayor Lukey Ravenstahl Steelerstahl and The Name Game

This is how you know it's a bad idea:

    1) Lil Mayor Luke Ravenstahl Steelerstahl said, "As soon as I heard it, I thought it was a great idea."

    2) According to Lil Mayor Luke Bathroomstahl, 'he and his wife, Erin, and 2-month-old son, Cooper, "didn't really talk about it, but I'm sure they wouldn't mind doing it, either."'

    3) When asked if "official actions, like vetoes of council legislation, could be challenged legally if the mayor's name is in limbo" Lil Mayor Luke WTFenstahl? said, "You'd have to ask the legal folks that question."

    4) Your mayor makes tonight's Countdown's "World's Best Persons" segment ('a collection of the day's top three "goofballs and good guys"') and Keith notes that your new name means "steelersteel." Guess which category Lil Mayor Lukey Lukey Bo Bukey Bonana Fanna Fo Fukey Fee Fy Mo Mukey, Lukey falls into?

On the other hand, there is no truth to the rumor that City Councilors Shields and Dowd are fighting over who gets to change their first name to "Big Ben."

Meanwhile, another name change has gone totally unnoticed:

Post-Gazette Turns to the Pittsburgh Mayoral Race

Rich Lord surveys the field and names names of those who might be willing to take on Lil Mayor Luke including: Carmen L. Robinson, Doug Shields and Republican Kevin Acklin.

The article also gives us more insight into Robinson's campaign and has Shield's take on Ravenstahl's popularity (or lack thereof).

    You can read it here.

    December 22, 2008

    Hello! Post-Gazette! Where are you?

I know that the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette -- like many in the print media -- is somewhat busy trying to navigate rough waters, but no stories on Lil Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's announced challenger, Carmen L. Robinson? Not a single mention?

I also acknowledge that this is the first mention of Ms. Robinson at 2pj, but we do have an excuse: It's not our JOB to report the news.

If Ms. Robinson's entry into the fray is not news than why have all these print, television news and blogs reported on Robinson's intention to run:
    Pittsburgh Tribune Review 12/5
    Pittsburgh Tribune Review 12/6
    WTAE 12/10
    WPXI 12/10
    Pittsburgh Hoagie 12/10
    The Busman's Holiday 12/10
The Blog of Burgher Jon 12/16
    Progress Pittsburgh 12/18
The Pittsburgh Women's Blogging Society 12/19
    Pittsburgh Hoagie 12/19
    The Pittsburgh Comet 12/19
And of course, the now defunct The Burgh Report
So I ask again: Where's the Post-Gazette on this story?

If you -- unlike the P-G -- are interested in Carmen Robinson, you can sign up for her mailing list at her preliminary website: http://www.carmenformayor.com or follow her on twitter @ http://twitter.com/Carmen4MayorPgh

An African American, Hill District resident, feminist woman running against Lil Mayor Luke surely must be some kind of trifecta in terms of belonging to groups that Lil Lukey has snubbed (now if only she had also litigated against Lamar Advertising).
